The Great Migration: When to Go for the Moment You’re Chasing
There is a rhythm to East Africa that has nothing to do with a calendar and everything to do with rain. Every year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras move in a great circle through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, chasing fresh grass across borders that mean nothing to them. It is one of the last truly wild spectacles left on earth, and unlike almost anything else you might travel to see, it never happens the same way twice.
We get asked constantly when the best time to see the Great Migration is. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which moment you’re chasing.

Fewer travelers plan around this window, but it may be even more moving. Starting as early as December and running through March, the herds gather in the southern Serengeti for calving season, with the heaviest births concentrated in February, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a few short weeks. The plains are full of new life and the predators that follow it closely. It’s quieter than a river crossing, but no less dramatic.

From April through June, the herds leave the southern plains and push north through the central Serengeti, grazing as they go. By late May and into June, they reach the Grumeti River, their first real obstacle on the way north. The crossings here are smaller and less predictable than the Mara’s, but that’s part of the appeal: far fewer vehicles, and a landscape still green from the rains. It’s a good option for travelers who want the drama of a crossing without the crowds.

This is the image most people picture when they think of the migration: thousands of wildebeest gathered on a riverbank, hesitating, then surging across the Mara River all at once while crocodiles wait below. It’s chaotic, tense, and unforgettable to witness in person. The crossings run from roughly July through September, with August and September typically the most active, and can continue into October as the herds linger in the north before turning south again.

By November, the dry season in the north starts to break, and the herds begin the long walk south again, moving through the eastern Serengeti ahead of the short rains. December brings them back to the southern plains, right where the cycle started, in time for calving to begin once more. It’s a transitional window, without a single big spectacle, but the moving columns against a darkening sky have their own quiet pull, and the crowds thin out considerably.
Why Migration Timing Shifts Every Year
The migration follows the rain, and the rain doesn’t follow a calendar. The exact timing of crossings and calving shifts from year to year, sometimes by weeks, which is exactly why we recommend mobile camps that follow the herds, moving every couple of weeks to keep you close to the action wherever it happens to be. These camps can be every bit as luxurious as a permanent lodge, so you’re not trading comfort for flexibility.
Why This is a Plan-Ahead Trip
The best mobile camps book out well over a year ahead for peak weeks. If a migration safari is on your mind for next year, now is exactly the right time to start the conversation.
A Safari Alternative Beyond the Migration
Not every safari needs to revolve around a specific event. If what you’re really after is the stillness of the bush without the pressure of catching a particular moment, Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau offers that same sense of wonder paired with quiet luxury, on your schedule rather than the herd’s. Its private conservancies see far fewer vehicles than the Mara, yet still deliver reliable Big Five sightings year-round, rhino included, along with the kind of walking safaris and night drives that busier parks don’t allow.
