From Meetings to Mythology: My Work Adventure in Greece
When people think of Greece, the mind usually jumps straight to Santorini’s whitewashed cliffs or the cosmopolitan energy of Mykonos. While these islands are iconic—and absolutely deserving of every traveler’s bucket list—this work trip allowed me to uncover an entirely different side of Greece. This journey featured the country’s largest island, Crete, and I have to say… it may now be my favorite destination to date.
This familiarization trip gave me a glimpse of a lesser-known, deeply authentic Greece. I met incredible vendors who dedicate themselves year-round to creating unique, immersive experiences for our clients—exactly why we do fam trips. There’s nothing like experiencing the magic firsthand and seeing what our partners can offer.
My ten days in Greece were unforgettable—full of history, relationship-building, and farm-to-table cuisine that Cretans take immense pride in. It showed me just how much more Greece has to offer beyond the typical island-hopping itinerary. My friend and I had already visited Mykonos and Santorini, but this trip? This one we’ll be talking about for years.

Athens: Architecture, Rooftops & Slow Weekend Mornings
As we touched down in Athens, we learned that nearly half of Greece’s population calls this vibrant city home. Athens is buzzing—full of chic rooftop restaurants, rich history on every corner, and unbeatable sunset views of the Acropolis. It made for the perfect arrival city, complete with a rooftop dinner to kick off the adventure.
During the weekend mornings, streets fill with locals savoring slow moments over cappuccino freddos and quiet conversations. Natalia, our guide shared these cultural details as we made our way through the lively streets toward the Acropolis on our first full day. If you’re someone like me—who loves to shop, explore, and find the best local spots—your guide will happily point you toward the city’s hidden gems.
Climbing the steps to the Acropolis, you’re instantly hit with awe. The sheer scale, the marble, the craftsmanship—it’s impossible not to wonder how on earth they built this masterpiece. Fortunately, our guide answered every question and even brought models to help explain the construction. We left feeling both humbled and inspired.

And of course, we ended the day with shopping. Spoiler Alert: both my friend and I had to buy an extra carry-on so we wouldn’t be overweight for our flight home. Oops.
Heraklion: Myths & Legends
After a short weekend in Athens, we flew to Crete and arrived in the port city of Heraklion. Here, I experienced what might be the best tour of my entire life at the archaeological site of Knossos.
While you can visit on your own, I highly recommend booking a professional guide—especially if you’re fascinated by mythology. Knossos is the birthplace of Zeus and the foundation of countless stories involving the Greek gods. With a guide, the ruins come alive through myth, history, and little-known details that decode the past in the most captivating way.

This was, without question, the highlight of my entire trip.
Elounda: Quiet Beaches & Seafood Nights
As we drove east toward Elounda, the scenery shifted to stunning beaches and turquoise waters. This area is ideal for travelers seeking a quiet coastal escape with a slower pace than Athens or Heraklion.
Each evening, we enjoyed the freshest seafood along Elounda’s serene coastline. After busy days exploring, this peaceful interlude was exactly what we needed before our final stop.

Chania: Mountains, Farm-to-Table Meals & Shopping Heaven
After a scenic (and not-so-short) drive to Chania, we made a few stops along the way to sample Cretan pastries and get a behind-the-scenes look at olive oil production. Crete produces a huge portion of Greece’s olive oil, and seeing the process from start to finish gave me a whole new appreciation for it.
As we climbed the western mountains, the landscape opened up to breathtaking coastal views. Chania greeted us with Venetian-style architecture, ancient walls, and a picturesque harbor.

One day, we headed into the mountains to learn how to cook like a local Cretan. Welcomed into a traditional family home surrounded by farmland, we cooked alongside a mother who had perfected her craft through decades of experience (and very precise “by eye” measurements). The meal we created was easily one of the freshest and most memorable I’ve ever tasted!

Another day, we wandered the charming city center—truly a European maze of winding streets, boutique shops, and tapas-style Greek restaurants. Earlier in the trip we’d been advised, “Get lost. It’s the only way to truly experience Chania.” They were absolutely right!
Be sure to leave room in your suitcase—Chania’s leather goods are unmatched. Olive oil, raki, handmade crafts… it’s a souvenir heaven.
And beyond the city, Chania also offers stunning beaches and unforgettable hikes, each with scenery that feels almost unreal. This destination left me wanting more.

Closing Thoughts
After visiting Crete, speaking with our vendors, and hearing stories from locals, I realized I only experienced a small fraction of what this phenomenal island offers. Crete is an underrated destination I wish more people knew about—because they are truly missing out.
This is an island where you’re not limited to one vacation “style.” Adventure, history, beaches, luxury resorts, food experiences, cultural immersion—Crete has it all.
I hope this inspires you to rethink what your next Greece trip could look like. Maybe it’s time to step off the typical island-hopping path and instead immerse yourself in a single destination—one that lets you slow down, connect, and truly experience everything Greece has to offer.
